Early Career & Rise in Shipping

Cassim began his professional journey at Ceylon Shipping Lines Ltd, where, under the guidance of Paul Hanson from Oslo, he quickly earned recognition. Hanson, who became both mentor and friend, endorsed Cassim to lead shipping operations after just six months. During this period, Cassim also developed a close association with S. P. Tao, a key figure in Sri Lanka’s shipping business. Their partnership laid the groundwork for his future entrepreneurial endeavors.

Entrepreneurship & Diversification

In 1963, Cassim leveraged his experience and network to launch HZ Cassim & Co., a shipping agency. He began with support from Tao—and even acquired a coconut estate in Giriulla as a financial buffer to support his new enterprise. The company quickly grew into a leading agency in Sri Lanka, enabling Cassim to repay his financial backers and reinvest in diverse ventures such as deep-sea trawler fishing and agricultural cultivation in regions like Elahera and Polonnaruwa.
